My Top 8 Tips for Packing Light and Smart
Packing light isn’t just about saving space—it’s the key to stress-free travel and making the most of every trip. After years of traveling to destinations like Brazil, Costa Rica, Spain, and Turks and Caicos, I’ve learned that smart packing means less hassle, lighter luggage, and more freedom to explore. Here are my favorite tips for keeping your suitcase light without leaving behind anything you need:
1. Make a Packing List Before You Start
A simple checklist helps you avoid tossing in last-minute extras and keeps you focused on essentials. I always stick to writing notes on my phone with a "things left to buy/pack" section to better remind myself of what I have left to pack.
2. Choose Multi-Use Clothing
Pack items you can mix and match for different outfits, and opt for pieces that work for various occasions—think a dress that works for the beach and for dinner, or a jacket that goes with everything.
3. Use Packing Cubes or Compression Bags
These help organize your clothes, maximize space, and keep your bag neat throughout your trip.
4. Limit Shoes to Two or Three Pairs
Bring one pair of comfortable walking shoes, flip-flops or sandals for down days, and maybe one dressier pair if needed—skip anything you won’t wear more than once.
5. Refill Small Toiletry Bottles
Only carry the amount of toiletries you’ll actually use for the trip, and choose multi-purpose products when possible. Target or Amazon has a great selection of these travel essentials.
6. Roll, Don’t Fold
Rolling clothes saves space, takes less time to pack, and keeps your wardrobe wrinkle-free. Take a decent amount of time packing and properly rolling your bottoms, dresses, and shirts.
7. Leave Room for Souvenirs
Resist the urge to fill every inch—having a little extra space lets you bring home memorable finds without struggle. I always love to bring back souvenirs for my family and friends, and remember to leave some space in my suitcase for these fun items.
8. Pack a Lightweight Day Bag
A slim tote or foldable backpack is perfect for day trips, beach outings, or market visits—and packs flat when not in use.
Packing light gets easier with practice. These tips will help you travel smarter, keep your essentials handy, and give you room to bring back a little piece of your adventure!
