6 Budget-Friendly Travel Destinations You’ll Love
Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive. Over the past few years, I explored some incredible places—Curacao, Los Cabos, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Rio de Janeiro, and Turks and Caicos—all on a budget by finding Airbnbs and affordable transport. Here’s how I made the most of each trip:
1. Curacao: Group Adventures and Local Eats
For our trip to Curacao, my friends and I shared an Airbnb, splitting the costs for a cozy stay. Renting a car together made it easy and affordable to explore hidden beaches—our expenses averaged significantly less per person than those of taxis or tours. We shopped at small local markets, enjoyed food trucks, and soaked in the island’s natural beauty without breaking the bank.
2. Los Cabos: Airbnbs & Local Life
I stayed in a centrally located Airbnb, which was much cheaper than a resort. Walking and using local buses kept transportation costs down. I filled my days with free and low-cost activities like hiking, visiting the marina, and checking out local markets, and enjoyed inexpensive street food like fresh fish tacos.
3. Costa Rica: Airbnbs in Nature
To experience Costa Rica affordably, I chose Airbnbs near national parks and beaches. This gave me a kitchen to cook meals and save more. Public buses between towns were reliable and cheap, and park entrance fees were reasonable, meaning I got to enjoy rainforests, wildlife, and beaches at a fraction of typical resort vacations.
4. Dominican Republic: Affordable All-Inclusives
My trip to the Dominican Republic was affordable thanks to an Airbnb close to local markets and city sights. I made use of public transport, and local tours were easy to find at great prices. Beach days, exploring colonial cities, and trying traditional foods kept things exciting and inexpensive.
5. Rio de Janeiro: Culture for Less
In Rio, I found a budget-friendly Airbnb in a lively neighborhood. This allowed me to walk or take public transit everywhere. Dining at “por kilo” restaurants saved money, and I spent most days at the city’s amazing free beaches or hiking to scenic spots. Free walking tours were a bonus, offering a local’s perspective without extra cost.
6. Turks and Caicos: Affordable Island Fun
Even in Turks and Caicos, I managed to keep costs low thanks to a vacation rental Airbnb with a kitchen. I focused on free activities—lounging on beaches, snorkeling with my own gear—and only splurged on one amazing paid excursion. Shopping at local groceries instead of eating out every meal helped stretch my budget even further.
